Choosing the “Right” Curriculum

When we started our homeschool journey, I was completely lost. I had my heart set on homeschooling my daughter and son. I visited hslda.org to find out the requirements for homeschooling in my state, and for Texas, there is not many requirements so I was free to do pretty much free to do things my way. This sounds great but if you are like me, I needed a lot more guidance on what to do, specifically the curriculum to use.

When it came to choosing curriculum for my daughter, I took to Facebook and joined different homeschool groups in my area. I made a post asking for recommendations and got a few responses but I didn’t stop there. I found the website cathyduffyreviews.com and began reading different reviews on a ton of different curriculum. I started using one that was free and quickly realized neither my daughter or myself liked it. It took me a couple of different ones to find one we both enjoyed.

I think that when it comes to homeschooling and choosing a curriculum it is a lot of trial an error. You won’t get it right the first time and maybe not even the second or third time. But, we know our children best and probably can figure out their learning style better than anyone else. There is no such thing as one “right curriculum”. We currently use two different ones and when I implement science we will be using 3 different curriculums! It works for my daughter and as long as she is learning and having fun then we will continue to use different curriculum to meet her learning needs.

So, if you are starting your homeschool journey or in the middle of it and feeling like you have to stick to the curriculum you chose, I am here to tell you, DON’T! It is okay to explore other curriculums even if you are in the middle of one. It is okay to use multiple curriculums for the different subjects you are teaching your child/children. There is no such thing as the “right” curriculum and it is definitely not a one-size-fits-all.
